Former WNBA player and Commack High School basketball star Samantha Prahalis-Holmes is making a significant impact off the court. Prahalis-Holmes, a decorated athlete with a successful college and professional career, is now dedicated to inspiring the next generation of female basketball players through her coaching and community involvement.
The two-day basketball clinic, hosted by Prahalis-Holmes at the Premier Sports Multi-Sport Training Center in Hauppauge, was a resounding success. Dozens of elementary school students participated, honing their dribbling, passing, and shooting skills under the guidance of a true basketball veteran. Prahalis-Holmes, who is also the girls basketball coach at The Stony Brook School, emphasized the importance of passing, shooting, dribbling, and the three-man weave during the clinic.
Her passion for the game and desire to give back to the community are evident in her words. "I just want to push the game forward," she said. "Girls basketball is on the rise, and I learned so much throughout my career. I want to pass it along and be that inspiration."
This sentiment resonates with parents and community members alike. Malverne athletic director Michael Pelan, whose daughter participated in the clinic, praised Prahalis-Holmes' dedication and the positive impact she's having on the children. "Someone helped her along the way, and now she wants to give back to everyone else," Pelan said. "The dedication, loyalty, and traits she instills are great for the kids."
Prahalis-Holmes' own journey to coaching was not an obvious one. Initially hesitant, she found her calling in the mental aspects of coaching and the opportunity to inspire others. "I volunteered in between going overseas, and then I loved it," she said. "I loved the mental aspect of it and the leadership. I love building, so when the opportunity came to host the clinics, I knew I had to jump on it."
The clinic was a testament to the growth of girls' basketball on Long Island. With around 30 kids in attendance, Prahalis-Holmes is committed to continuing these free clinics as a way to give back to the community and nurture the sport's future stars. Her influence and dedication are invaluable, and her impact on the sport and the lives of young athletes will undoubtedly be long-lasting.
